Promised pictures of Bracers

Not to get the quiver thread to far of topic I'll post the picture of the bracer here.
Its just a simple leather bracer with deer antler buttons. If I get ambitions I may post the patters if anyone is interested.

Bracer in action - sort of, its not tied tightly.

Clean and simple. Were the antler buttons hard to do? Are you still happy with their size?

I just picked a couple deer antlers from the local archery shop, there's a guy there who builds these awesome Osage bows, apparently he thought he was the only bowyer in WV, so when I went in there with my new elb to get a string he just gave me some antlers and a nice strip of Bamboo. I digress, enough rambling, I'll have to try that sometime.

I do like the deer antler, i don't remember it being hard to use, but I didn't have to much to do with cutting them. A band saw and drill press made short work of them. I am happy with the size of the buttons. The arm guard works well stays put even if it gets a good wack from a bow string.

Here's the one I got custom made by LoveDuck leather (http://www.loveduckleather.com), since I don't work in leather.

The guy's name is Adam, and he does some AWESOME work, at very reasonable prices. This cost me 50 dollars, shipping included.

When I can swing it, he's making me a matching quiver.

So I was planning no making a leather bracer for myself. After seeing pics of what happens with underspined arrows, I'm thinking now of having my bracer extend over my hand a little and maybe put some thin steel scales on it, theoretically to deflect a broken arrow. Knowing my safety record, rather be safe than sorry. Also I'm making practice arrows for my first "practice" bow I'm making. 3/8" Hardwood dowels. Probably not the safest option, but they are cheap. Dont know how powerful my bow is going to be but the spine on dowels cant be fantastic. Anyone heard of a bracer like that?

Sorry for the long delay on post approval CPT. The thread was never marked as having a new post, and it wasn't noticed.

I've never heard of a bracer like the one you described, but it sounds like a great idea if you're worried about arrows breaking.
I think the scales would look great!

As for the dowels, plenty of folks use dowels for their arrows. Just pick a good hardwood dowel, like Oak, and you should be fine.
Just don't go shooting them from a 60# bow.
If you build it, they will come.

Well I was worried about finding a source of steel sheet metal. Struck gold while day dreaming through Ace Hardware, which I recomend everyone should do, and found some affordable steel sheet in the perfect size. I went to savers today, got a cheap pot. Going to experiment with different times in the hot water to get the leather how I want. The leather I ordered is also a bit thinner than I hoped, so we'll see how much it thickens up.
